Car Thefts to Order
A report by the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ) reveals that between January an September this year there have been 735 "bajonazos" - robbery at gunpoint - in San José, that involve drivers who had to give up their cars to gangs of thieves.

Rodríguez in Houston, OAS Confirms
Yesterday we reported that the whereabouts of former Costa Rican president, Miguel Angel Rodríguez, were unknown following his resignation as Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Protests Against Corruption Tomorrow
Tomorrow will be a day of protest in Costa Rica, as the streets of downtown San José will be filled with University students, who will be dressed in patriotic colours, promoting a peaceful and massive protest against corruption in the country. 

2.5 tons of cocaine seized in Peru
The Peruvian police have destroyed 60 makeshift drug laboratories and seized 2.5 tons of cocaine in a five-day raid in Peru's jungle drug heartland, according to an official statement released on Sunday.

U.S. to double military in Colombia
The number of U.S. military personnel in Colombia will double, to 800, in the coming months, based on a weekend vote in the U.S. Congress.

Brazil's federal Indian rights agency, Funai, expressed their condolences Sunday following the weekend killing of an Indian rights specialist.

BRAZIL A strike against slave labour The Brazilian Congress has passed a constitutional amendment dealing a major blow to slave labor on the country’s rural haciendas. The amendment, passed on Aug. 11, states that "rural and urban properties in any region of the country where illegal psycho-tropic plants are grown or slave labor used will be expropriated and turned over for agrarian reform or low-income housing programs without any form of indemnification for the owner and without affecting other sanctions included in the law." Pressure to pass the amendment picked up steam in late January after several government inspectors were killed.
