Tax Man Wants His Share
Now, the La Dirección
General de Tributación - the Tax Man - has started to dig into the
affairs of those accused or linked to all the scandals - the
Fischel-Caja, ICE-Alcatel and the Compañía de Fuerza y Luz (FyL).
ICE-Alcatel Scandal List Grows By Two
The ICE-Alcatel list of
suspects keeps on growing. Two new additions were made to the list
that includes former president Miguel Angel Rodríguez, his former
Housing Minister and director of ICE, José Antonio Lobo (who gave up
Rodríguez), along with a score of other ICE employees and the former
president of Alcatel Costa Rica, Edgar Valverde.
High Cost of Gasoline Does Not Deter Drivers
It appears that the high
cost of gasoline is no deterrence for "Ticos" not to use their cars.
They complain, but still, use their cars more and more.

ABC Makes Good On Banco ELCA Deposits
When the Asociación Bancaria
Costarricense (ABC) made the announcement back in August that it
would pay depositors up to ¢4.500.000 (us$10.000) at failed Banco
ELCA, there was as sigh of relief by many small depositors, who with
the experience of other failed private banks, were writing off their
savings.

U.S. ELECTION:
The Bush
Appeal
Strong, sure
and honest. That is what many U.S. voters see in President George W
Bush, including people not born in this country -- while some of the
incumbent's backers exhibit less laudable qualities.
The president made a brief campaign appearance at the Coconut Grove
Convention Centre here Sunday to rally his faithful two days before the
end of a tight, tense presidential race.
This reporter and journalists from Brazil, the Czech Republic and
Slovakia were refused entrance because, according to security officials,
fire marshals were not allowing any more people into the building, media
or otherwise.
Outside, Bush supporters who had not made it in to hear their candidate
speak milled about, chanting and waving signs.
Along the entrance road to the convention centre, a crowd of a couple of
hundred Bush partisans chanted slogans, while on the other side of the
street a smaller group of protesters and supporters of the president's
main rival, Senator John Kerry, bellowed back.
