Simply because someone claims to be defending human rights doesn’t mean that they are–at least in the opinion of others who construe human rights differently.

We all have a current taste of this now that the human rights groups have committed to monitoring the safe passage of the 7800 or so Cubans in Costa Rica to the US. Those same groups though are silent about the Cubans stuck in Panama.

And I see from the story that environmentalists are considered human rights activists. OK, environmentalism is a good thing, but is activism for that cause human rights? If it is, couldn’t activism for economic growth by the multinationals also be considered human rights?

I strongly support human rights, just tend to be suspicious of those who claim that their crusade is for human rights while other crusades aren’t.
