Once there they were likely transferred cash via Western Union, MoneyGram, etc. from relatives in the US to continue their journey. That likely explains also why they tend to spend two weeks in Ecuador – they obviously can’t get that much cash in a single transfer, so their relatives in the states send them a series of $900 or $1k transfers until they have enough cash to continue their trip and pay the coyotes, bribes, etc. necessary.
