Everyone is always saying how bad the drivers are. Give them tickets, hit them in the pockets, works everywhere else. Just saying, you want better drivers on the road, you have to make the violators pay or they will continue to drive like they have a free pass…..

Man o man ain’t that the truth.They used to just look for me and other Gringos so they could shake me down.They would flag me over every time they saw me and search my papers until they found some stupid something. One time I told the cop that I was sick and tired of the shake downs and told him to give me the ticket–he was really surprised and kept telling me how much it would cost–I said just give me the ticket. I gave the ticket to my lawyer and never heard about it again.
But they were shaking down Gringos in my town and taking the license plates. The Gringos took the complaints to OIJ and the cops were caught. I saw the cops out there working traffic the next week like nothing had changed but they weren’t taking any more plates.

Terrible news. Just giving more power to a poorly trained very corrupt police force. They will now pull you over and threaten you with a big fine for something you didn’t do (driving while gringo o extranjero) unless you give them $$$$. Time to hire a driver.

Excellent news! The government could realize an enormous influx of revenues, and the driving public would be markedly safer, if Fuerza Publica would take an active role, in vehicles, bicycles and on foot, in traffic enforcement! Adelante!
