Wonderful – a precedent. That would also short circuit the oppositions next delay tactic – which will likely be a succession of individual medical providers saying that they will not do the procedure because it goes against their personal beliefs. It’s just another in a series of ways to prevent something from happening but by indirect and non-confrontational means.

CCSS has actually done this in the past, by the way, and I could see it happening again. They have paid for patients’ travel and lodging expenses also, for Caja patients that need medically necessary procedures not available here, including sending patients to Colombia and the United States.

Costa Rica likes to promote itself as a medical tourism destination. Well, how about reversing that and outsourcing this particular procedure to Panama? At the $7,500 per successful pregnancy cost quoted in a Panamanian private clinic, the CCSS budget will only be slightly affected. Of course, the CCSS will lose the ability to add to their already grossly inflated budget.

When will the government realize it is broke? First it need to tax the Church, instead of giving it a million dollars a yr. Then cut all benefits, Elected officials should get nothing,Public worker should get a 50% cut in pay and benefits. All of them should be audited. Then legalize and tax Marijuana and use the tax for the school.
