Usually the procedure is to shoot the guy first, then fire a round into the air, and if the guy is unarmed, put an old machete in his hands. I wonder if they even tried to find the expended bullet in the ground to make sure what happened in his case.

Unfortunately, Ken, in Costa Rica there usually is. Following my own experiences when living in CR I would be suspicious of any judge’s motivation and will just watch this work itself out.

Good to hear of this new wrinkle to the story. Although I’m not connecting all the dots yet, the initial story of the ranger being railroaded simply because he did his job wasn’t entirely believable. Evidently there’s a good bit more to the story.
