For the most part workers will find somewhere off in the bushes, out of the field, to do their business. I'm assuming it's that way for nearly all developing countries. That's not really the issue. Rather, that where the processing, i.e cleaning and packaging, takes place they don't have strict sanitary procedures. And that is something that is relatively well controlled here in CR. The fruit processing plants that I'm familiar with here all have pretty strict guidelines about that sort of thing. They need to in order to remain legal.

You would be hard pressed to find a farm in Costa Rica that has any sort of bathrooms out on the fields. Poor people working their asses off all day long for peanuts. You see them in the cities-after a 10 hr day, then maybe 2 hours more coming home on the buses. I know because I worked at a job in CR. It sucks. Too hard for me, but then I am older and disabled and I couldn't take it. I saw women ( my fiancee' for one), picking coffee beans for $5 per day--sometimes less-depends on how much you can pick-different fields yield less than others--depending on the terrain. All I can say is THANK GOD FOR THE GOOD 'OL USA !!! Yes we are going into the greatest depression the USA has ever seen and it will be worldwide, but it will be harder on the Americans who have been used to high pay and soft conditions. Many seem unable to adapt to the serious belt tightening which will be needed to just survive in the coming months--yes we are that close--and it will last from when it comes- to the rest of our lives. We are not coming out of this one folks. Get ready to adapt or die.Don't do as I did and spend foolishly--when it's gone it will be much harder to get back .Even buying silver or gold is no sure bet as the "ones in control" hold sway over that also-don't kid yourselves, "they" control all monetary systems. Will gold recover? Who knows? The new currencies being exchanged in the eastern block countries are gold backed--has that caused gold prices to rise? NO! The gold prices continue to fall.I remember a man who looked at my property when I was selling out in CR. He had invested over $200k in silver when it was near $50@ oz. What is it selling for today? $14!!!!!!! He could only cash out now for around $70k--What a loss! Will it come back and even surpass $50@ oz? God I hope so. Land--growing your own food--that is the absolute best bet. How many of us can do that? Not many. I am soooo happy that I do not depend upon the system and that I have the faith and trust that Almighty God will be there for me in the clinch--after all--He is still in control of the big picture-it has been foretold in His Word the bible. Even if I get caught up under the evil boots of the oppressors, I know I will go to heaven to be with my Savior Jesus Christ in Eternity--so the worst "They" can do to me is kill this earthly body and send me home to heaven a little early. Remember the bible says "They" will hide in the caves and try to escape God's wrath and even call for the rocks to fall upon them to let them die--so as to try to escape the wrath of God coming down upon them. ( Rev. 6:16) We, the Christians, won't be here then, either having been beheaded for refusing to take the "mark of the beast" or gone in the rapture. But the bible does say that "you will not be able to buy or sell without the mark of the beast-in the last days( Rev.13:17). That is what is coming-a financial system so pervasive that no currency or precious metal will work as a medium of exchange, and the bible does say that men will throw their silver into the streets.(Ezekiel 7:19) So what must occur so that men will throw their silver into the streets? Either it will be worthless or there will be such a penalty to be caught with it that throwing it into the streets will be more favorable than being caught with it. This is the time to examine all that you hold worthy and search for the truth of God's promise of eternal life in heaven through accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Life is a bitch in these Central American countries.
