Desperate times call for desperate measures. Who cares how the residents solve the dust problem. It’s better than the government workers paid to maintain the roads who plump their useless, fat asses on a stool in the local cantina watching someone else do the job.

I have no experience as to the amount of salt needed to keep the dust down. But my guess is that it would take more than your suggesting. And yes, the houses really close to the surf have serious problems with corrosion. The similarity that I was referring to was that Michigan does apply salt to the roads in winter (rock salt which is chemically nearly identical to sea salt)

and it rusts cars in a matter of years.

I live in the Nicoya area and some people do use water. But they also have to apply it a few times daily. Hardly efficient when you are talking the area they are trying to do. It would take a water truck everyday, a driver for at least a few hours a day, maintenance, marchamo, etc. Hardly a solution.

What is so wrong with Molasses? I have seen it work quite well. Its a lot easier to clean off of a vehicle than tar and smells better. As far as environmental impact, probably safe to say that it is going to have much less of an impact than tar.

Why do you call them idiots? They are just citizens of the town looking for a solution from only donations because the municipality of Nicoya does nothing to help the communities on the coast that are in their canton.

On the gravel roads of the U.S.Midwest they would spray a calcium chloride solution. Cheap and plentiful and safe.

Not really. Just the night and early morning air there on the beach is highly laden with salt. Just take a peek at an air conditioner there. The salts used to melt ice are applied very heavily and are quite different than sea salt. A light spray of ocean water doesn’t contain enough salt to even kill the grass or weeds. I didn’t know that Michigan and Costa Rica were so similar. So they put salt on gravel roads there in Michigan?

Would you really want to be dusting the undercarriage of your vehicle with salt? I know I wouldn’t. Coming from Michigan, I can tell you that it’s a bad idea.
