Where is this salt water supposed to come from? Last time I checked, Lago Cocibolca is around 100m above sea level, and unless things have changed water runs downhill.

Costa Rica is a corrupt country they have no say in this, look at all the garbage in the streets in San Jose, go Nicaragua and prosper. Costa Rica’s politicians will cut the whole forests if they can make a few millions and they have done just that.

The manner in which Nicaragua plans to drain excess salt water into the Rio San Juan should be elaborated and its ecological impact should be fully investigated. Governments and industries have too long viewed rivers as little more than sewers, and it is long past time for positive steps to be taken to reverse the trend – certainly, they should not be permitted to make matters worse. While the river in question is part of Nicaraguan territory, the impact of this action on the entire ecosystem, and especially on the Rio Colorado, should be assessed before the canal is permitted to open. Perhaps a better plan would be to run a pipeline along the course of the canal and pipe the salt water to the coast.
