Pretty good example of the haywire thinking that arises in response to crime. So in theory Guatemala is going to imprison 142,745 new people (or almost 1% of its population) every year for a minimum of six years for stealing a cell phone? After six years this leaves every 19 men, women, and children supporting a cell phone thief in prison. I’m not saying that there isn’t a problem, only pointing out that the solution isn’t workable. Moreover, if the argument is that the incarceration of a few will deter others, the question is why like 10 cell phone thieves a month deserve prison when 11,990 get away with it.

Ho ho ho ho!!! Another hare-brain idea from you know who! At a rate of thousands of cellphones stolen every year, where are they going to lock up the criminals? Weren’t we hearing only a couple of weeks ago that the “peaceful” prisoners were going to be released to alleviate over crowding in the prisons? What gives?

If only the lawmakers in Costa Rica would wake up and make it illegal to purchase or possess stolen property. That at least would be a start in working towards reducing theft in this “Criminals Paradise”!
