Hello! McDonalds reopened a restaurant in Santa Cruz on past April. Then it plans to reopen restaurants in La Paz and other cities. Also, you may eat at KFC, Hard Rock, KFC, Burger King, Taco Bell among others franchises, specially in Santa Cruz..

Bolivians were not fightng against capitalism when McDonalds left the country in 2002. Sorry if I disappoint you.

I don’t know why, the notion that Bolivia said no to McD is spinning around many internet media outlets over the last semester or so. This story is simply not true. Bolivia never said “no” to McD, but rather the other way around. in 2002 McD took the corporate decision to withdraw from Bolivia and other 18 countries (Turkey and Belgium among them) where it wasn’t earning revenue above a certain percentage. I know this because I was a Coca-Cola executive in Bolivia at the time and McD was our most important client. On the other hand, all this blablabla about the Bolivian diet being so marvelous is just that: blablabla. Just like any other country, Bolivia has its own and very peculiar cuisine, with its ups and downs. Nothing to flip over about. And then again, McD is one of the very few global fast food chains absent from the Bolivian market (yes folks, even socialist Bolivia is a marketplace). You can eat about any other pizza, burger, sandwich that your heart desires in a very global-nondescript looking food plaza in almost any Bolivian major city. Luckily, there are plenty of tasty locall foods too. Freedom of choice is always a good thing to have.

McDonalds might have failed, but I know for a fact there’s a Burger King thriving on one of the main drags in Cocha.

This article shows very little understanding of Bolivian food culture. For the majority of Bolivians quinoa is very expensive and rarely used except perhaps in soup. Hamburgers, french fries, and other fast food are abundant in street-side stalls, as are the prevalent fried-chicken chains such as Pollo Copacabana that permeate all cities. I wish this article were true, but my many years living in Bolivia have shown that it is not. This is not a critique of Bolivian cuisine, I think they do largely eat a healthier diet and have a healthier relationship with food than my native US culture, and they definitely grow a lot of healthy foods. This article is simply misinformed.
