1. i speak from Nicaragua. which is how and why i made the post. the canal is not private, it is an agreement with the government to a private party, all benefits go to the Nicaraguan government or a Chinese company. get it straight. it is no more private than the new limon docks will be.
2. nowhere did i say ortega “concocted” this deal after chavez died. i said this helps replace the backing he had with chavez alive and pouring money into his pockets. he needed it. duh.
3. i specifically cited my evidence as anecdotal, and you cite polls that have even less validity, no citation. 70% to 80% support my ass. as if elections here are real. ask any Nicaraguan if they think politics here are “limpia”. there is still the santa klaus attitude, which is dysfunctional left, but also cited as anecdotal as noted in my first post.
4. rosario is the main organizing power of the party. anyone paying attention sees that. she controls all the citizen committees and mayoral plums she drops.
5. so about the only thing you are right about is the part you agree with me on.

so what is your point then? that sandanistaism is a viable economic model? or is this just another wack the right guy post?

I assume you see yourself as speaking from the right rather than from the “Santa Claus” left, so I must point out that the canal is a private initiative. Sure, it requires state concessions, massive ones, but it’s fundamentally private enterprise. It’s also a little silly to assume that Ortega only concocted this deal after Chávez died. These things take time, and the main thing Chávez wanted was the oil pipeline. I assure you that Ortega was on top of it while Chávez was alive and kicking. And as for the perception that Nicaragua’s government is failing, this may be your perception but it isn’t the Nicas’ perception. Ortega is currently commanding 70-80% support, which is huge anywhere in the world. The one thing you are right about is that this does make Daniel even stronger, although I’m still doubtful about Rosario following him. She might, but the couple has been grooming one of their sons for the top spot.

with chavez dead, daniel is desperate to replace the support that drives a government that is perceived as failing. anecdotal changes in what i see here on the ground is that there is a lot of frustration with daniel the person while still believing the santa claus aspect of the system they have as an ideal is possible, that their “regalos” are simply consumed by the partido. the same “if we just had the right people” we could make this left wing fantasy a reality you hear from the left everywhere. the point of this “working” or not will be how the partido views the deal. will it make daniel stronger and rosario the designated successor, or will it be viewed as exposing further corruption?
