Come on, the issue is an upsurge in a certain kind of crime in Limón, one province, and it behooves us to focus on this. Evidently, the drug runners have moved into Limón, and in consequence have brought with them some generally unsavory types while sucking some of the local kids into addiction and criminality. Interestingly, many of these crimes appear to be committed by outsiders, not Ticos. Behind this is in turn US demand for drugs, so indirectly US policy and tastes are the cause of the crime wave. Unless Costa Rica AND the US get a handle on this problem, which I'm persuaded will require a change in US policy, it's only going to get worse. Generalized bitching really isn't helping.

Ah, the usual bitching about Costa Rica, then the usual bitching about those who bitch, and not least the usual ideologue weighing in to bitch about social democracies the world over. I have lived in Costa Rica for eight years now and have never been assaulted or stolen from. The US is probably the last place on earth who is entitled to do any fingerpointing to any other country in terms of violence. Your country has a serious drug problem and your gun culture is a prime example to the rest of the planet of how not to do it. As far as I am concerned, US-Americans should have to apply for a licence to own a vegetable peeler.

I am disgusted by all these ugly comments about Costa Rica – presumably by unhappy US-Americans. Why do you say it is a joke that this is one of the happiest places? And that the people here are NOT some of the happiest? Why is it that Ticos deserve to lose their jobs? I know plenty of people both national and foreign that are really happy and have had great employees and bad ones. Donna thank you for being one of the only positive people that posted. The government better get a grip – and they have - and things HAVE improved – and they need to improve more. For your information this article above is a crock – the main reason this hotel is shutting down is that it was built to accommodate the cruise ships and their guests for their 1 days stay in Limon Port – these numbers, for whatever reason, have really gone down over the past 2 years – and they were losing money – and then they had some run ins with crime – but to say that crime alone is the reason they are closing is an outright lie.

What a bunch of ( most of you – not all ) really unhappy
people you all are – I do empathize with those of you that have had bad
experiences here and do not want to discount them – however after living here
for 15 years I got to say – I still love this place.
