The buses here are a large part of the problem. each bus contains about 400 cubic meters of air, and all of that air needs to be exchanged with fresh air so that there is a complete change every ten minutes or preferably, less. Ticos believe that respiratory infections are caused by the wind, so normally all windows are opened only very slightly. Also, Costa Rica has a long way to go in promoting constant handwashing and in covering the mouth while coughing or sneezing.
