There were it appears 527 murders in Costa Rica and 252 were committed with a gun…….that leaves 275 killed some other way……..

I don’t like guns, but I like letting only the criminals possess them less. Especially in a place where the police are not able to protect you. To not allow a responsible homeowner to have a gun presently in their home is detrimental to the economy. Thieves won’t shop for what they can just take.

I don’t have any problem with a safety campaign, even one that discourages gun ownership, but stricter regulations is precisely the opposite of the policy that Costa Rica needs. Currently, approximately 150,000 of 450,000 firearms in the country are registered, and the obvious reason for the low registration rate is that registering a gun is a real hassle and expense, requiring visits to multiple offices and costing over $160 in fees. Most gun owners therefore don’t bother with it, which in turn creates a more profitable black market for illegal guns. We’ve all seen that robberies of gun stores are now routine, and even a police substation was robbed of its guns. The solution is not to toughen registration requirements, but to relax them, since the goal is to get most guns registered, clean up the black market, and then target the few who really shouldn’t own guns. Stricter regulations will have the opposite effect, I’m afraid, and this is boneheaded policy that will do more harm than good (in the sanctimonious name of doing good).

So is the President and Congress going to do away with armed security? The police are underpaid , lazy and poorly trained. The only way to lower crime is a trained and well armed public.
