A little harsh, but crucial points. You often have to wonder how exactly tourism helps local economies–and then you even suspect it may hurt. If the fancy resorts weren’t built, presumably something else would have been, so simply saying that tourism creates X number of (usually low-wage dead-end) jobs doesn’t tell you what other jobs were not created because the resorts invaded and now dominate the economy.

ahh all inclusives.. where the money you spend mostly goes back to Spain, US or Canada.. with little benefit to the local economy ‘cept low paid jobs.. you look out the window, see palms and try to guess what country you’re in? The only contact you have with ‘locals’ is the person who makes your bed, and the guy who lugs your luggage? You speak loudly when you address the ‘locals’ cause you haven’t bothered to learn any local lingo, and get annoyed when they don’t understand you. You get to spend 3 or 4 times what you’d pay staying at ‘local’ accommodations. You get to ‘see’ locals from the window of your A/C tour bus as you drive through neighborhoods of poor people? Stop and buy ‘local’ artifacts; Made in China. Some boomers give old folks a bad name.

I suspect that WatchBoom.com is geared toward a more upscale audience than ourselves & our boomer friends, none of whom has ever gone on an all-inclusive vacation. Most of us rent a car or board a bus and see where the adventure takes us.
