ken is right. there is no correlation between new facilities and learning. new facilities are just easier to vandalized which is exactly what would happen.

those old time public schools are gone. visit one today. no one is learning. you cannot change a public school, you can change a private school. i prefer profit over public union employees any day of the week.

Why does everyone feel the need to be cynical and negative? There are schools in Costa Rica that are overcrowded and others in need of major repairs or refurbishing. There are many rural areas where kids don’t have easy access to high school and technical schools are very important. (We have to train someone to take care of all our electronics after all! Or fix our cars…. or build our houses…..) I would suggest that people with such negative attitudes start learning a little more about what is really happening in Costa Rica.

I take issue with “uninvited guest” because it is synonymous with “unwanted”. To the contrary, obtaining residency means being officially invited by the Costa Rican government and people to live here and participate in the life here. It seems to me like this is more like “gringo bashing” on your part.

Your about 80% right. After consultant fee’s and more consultants Plus other fee’s and the building products as much as 30% plus over normal cost. And I doubt ever if the money ever paided back. Inter-American Development Bank (BID, in Spanish).30% of the funding from the USA. How can CR pay this in 5 years grace period? What going to change?

My children went to and graduated from a small school class of 35 in the foothills which was primarily loggin industry with residents from NC…and they are both productive adults with high income by their 30th BD’s….. private schools are not the answer..look around here in CR…private schools are business and could care less about the children…the bottom line is high tuition charged and year end profit….it is the home environment that produces good results…and with both parents working to pay for private schools who is caring for the children…an uninterested party…a nanny, a neighbor or who????

Have you seen some of these schools….they are in horrible condition and I think atmosphere goes a long way to learning. Home environment is surely important but that starts with the children educating the parents in this country. Some of these children only get fed a half way decent meal at school and for example if the so if the kitchen is in disarray and the bathrooms then the hygiene affects the children…there are many other things to consider other than the pockets new construction may fill…that is the mental health and pride of going to school in a nice facility.
