Is it a “no chorizo” problem ? Subdirector “not aware” of how to obtain parts for his responsibilities ? 75 cars “total loss – why total loss ? – who is responsible ? CARS missing worth how much $$$

So we agree. They are untrained and not well compensated but I stand by my statement that they are COPS who are afraid to be COPS. If they feel unsafe due to lack of training (or for any other reason), they need to get another job. To give the public a false sense of security by pretending to be a public servant is a disservice to the community. If you can’t confront a criminal, you are in the wrong line of work; you need to find another job. Period! I actually had one of the Coco cops tell me “if you catch a thief in your house and happen to kill him, just throw him in the ocean and go about your business.” Really? This is what constitutes law enforcement to you? Comments like that represent far more than a lack of training, this is a complete absence of moral foundation. These guys are no better than the(and quite often worse than) the criminals they are supposed to defend against. With regards to the free cars from China; take what you can get. But as is standard practice with the government here, no one thinks things through. Ever! The ridiculous laws they pass, only to rescind because no one thought about how to implement or enforce them or worse, they stay on the books for corrupt cops to use as another method of extortion is another example. I could go on but I don’t have all day to list the things which showcase the total lack of foresight and downright stupidity that exists in the halls of government. Costa Rica is sliding backwards, and fast. The government has squandered the significant advantage they had as a result of not falling victim to the US sponsored dictators who ravaged Central and South America over the last century. Now, as a result of their greedy tax laws, onerous residency requirements, absolutely unaccountable legal profession, quagmire bureaucracy etc etc etc, both Nicaragua?!?!?!?! and Panama now outrank Costa Rica in terms of safety, affordability and desirability as a retirement destination. Costa Rica could have dominated economically. Now they’ve stupidly taken a page out of the US playbook and extended amnesty to Nica’s, a lot of whom do the work no one else wants, while making residency more difficult for North Americans and Europeans who have the money and business acumen to create jobs instead of just taking them.

@Paradise Fractions: just for records: I was being sarcastic about getting those cars! The real problem is that police officers are not well trained and don’t get well paid. IMHO, it’s easy to say they “lack moral and testicular fortitude” when you are behind ur desk, all safe and secure. They are out there trying to make a living but do not have any support from us. Can you blame them for being humble guys, or as you said “campesino cops”? Can you imaging having to go out beggin’ for money to do your job? It’s simplistic to say “wake up, nothing’s for free, don’t take chinese gifts” or as Nearhoff said “kiss ass for”, when even the USA can’t refuse chinese investment. i have a place in coco and it is actually much worse than the above statement. the cops know each and every ladrone. the regular places for muggins are behind the lizard and the foot bridge to vida loca. both are within a few hundred meters of the cop shop. past weekend a local trouble maker hit a guy in the head with a bottle, almost chopped off another guy’s hand and slashed open another guy’s face 18 inches. he is back out camped right where he did the crime. the cops regularly shake down dealers for product to party on. the real problem this all causes is that vigilantism will be the result. when citizens start maiming and killing these pukes i bet the cops will get real active.

UNTIL you can’t fill them up? That is already a big problem out here in Playas del Coco (and many other rural municipalities). The cops routinely make rounds to local businesses begging for gas money (in addition to food, drink, pens, paper etc.) When they don’t get the money, they simply stay put and the area is placed at higher risk than usual. The area around the local cop shop here has looked like a cop car grave yard for a few years now. Gas is a pretty irrelevant issue when cops refuse to exit their vehicles to confront criminals after taking hours to arrive at a report of an armed home invasion or even bother to get off their lazy asses when they receive reports of crimes in progress happening in earshot of their comfy little desk chairs. IMHO, giving these Campesino Cops new cars with high tech gadgets is about as useful as tits on a bull or a monkey with an iPad. This gift of technology is worthless when given to the untrained who lack moral and testicular fortitude or financial incentive to do their jobs in the first place.

Most of our public offices are extremely bad at planning are setting responsibilities amongst their employees. No one had thought about maintenance until now when most of the cars are broken and yet no one will be responsible for that. How do you fix that? I’d love to see our police officers on those amazing Gas guzzlers American cars, all armored, full of gadgets like GPS etc. Let’s buy those cars until gas prices get so high that we can’t fill’em up!
