either the president is very naive or being cynically political…. i.e. lying. the cost of credit to lenders is a lot more than the interest lenders pay to acquire funds. servicing credit in a country that uses a dozen people to do the work of one person, a place where labor law is entirely dysfunctional, a country where credit scores are as accurate carnival astrology, where addresses and locating people is near impossible, and let us not even mention the default rate. my guess is the net profit percentages in lending stratifies with credit risk in a manner similar to the rest of the world. but of course, I am just guessing because no way you could extract that info accurately in CR.
as to gasoline prices. just get government out of selling it. problem solved.

Hell yes, saving $4 per gallon is a lot if you drive a lot. If u sit in you home all day and don’t go anywhere than all is ok.I would like the $200 a week in my pocket or give to local school.

Lady Laura planning on living outside this country anyway once she is put out to pasture with her huge pension and benefits. She will never look back at those she has disappointed. Next president and minister/diputados can and will do the same. The Costarricenses here do not seem yo mind at all. Why should we?

Randy… you are wrong. They drill and pump their own oil and PetroEcuador does most of the refining. I saw the wells and I saw the pipeline and drove right past the refineries in Esmeraldas.
