I wonder if they will offer “driving school lessons” to the Ticos as well The experience with our driver from Poas Volcano to Grecia was like “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride”

This is good news, but what about those current drivers on the road? This is good start….I know every time I get in my car to drive I know I have to be so defensive with my eyes wide open in anticipation of those drivers that don’t have a clue about any rules of the road. Oh, wait a minute…are there road rules here? One of the worst offenders is passing on double lines…you see it all the time with no consequences….until it is too late and a life is lost. Can be scary for sure.

I wonder if this will impact gringos who come here and apply for their first CR license. Or will MOPT simply consider their US drivers license sufficient? Time will tell.

When I read somewhere that a good portion of Tico drivers don’t even know how to change their headlights from low to high beams in their own cars, I realized that driving knowledge really is deficient here. Schools are therefore a good thing. However, I don’t favor making schools mandatory. If a person can pass a rigorous test, they shouldn’t have to waste time in school. Plus, the schools will just add another layer of corruption. Already some unknown portion of licenses are issued to people who bribe the examiner or pay someone else to take the test for them. Now the schools will get into the business of selling phony graduation certificates. Where the rubber hits the road is in the driving test. That test should be rigorous and the examiners honest. Maybe anyone who fails the test should be required to go to school? I dunno, just see requiring schools as adding another layer of corruption.

Just glad to see that it is finally happening. Learning from friends and family only passes on the bad habits of the instructor and we have seen the results of that. Congrats CR for joining the rest of the world.
