Hospital stays are indeed exagerated since there is no incentive to move patients out of the beds. And, if one should be scheduled for non-emergrency surgery, or a procedure and has been admitted to the hospital, if that person leaves his/her spot it is taken up by the next in line; a roomate! The idea is stay as long as possible and enjoy the rest.

since the earthquake caused substantial damage to the CCSS hospital in Puntarenas, there are now fewer beds. That would be my CAJA hospital but I don’t know where I’d go if I needed one.

It occurs to me that a lot of people here are “sick” at any given time. It would be interesting to look at the statistics of “clinic”, hospital visits per capita and compare that with “developed” nations. I know there are some highly medical-socialized countries in Europe (eg. Sweden) where one might expect to see otherwise “rugged” individuals with a high number of sick days. Someone mentioned length of hospital stays here due to inefficiency. That’s problematic, as well.

In 2008, I was placed in an emergency room hallway while awaiting a leg amputation. So, this problem has been acute for some years.

Well, the Caja definitely needs more beds (and more funding generally) but as an 18-day veteran of one, it’s fairly obvious that too many patients stay too long in the hospitals. Once you’re in, it’s like waiting for a parole board hearing to get out. There are delays in everything, including of course the paperwork, which make many patients languish a lot of extra days for no reason beyond bureaucratic inefficiencies.
