so, authorities continue going to the island every day, ‘searching’ for drugs, coming back with red eyes (the wind, don’t you know)… going back again next day, ‘searching’ again… next day.. well, you see the drill here? Jamaican Red, man, what a shame!

Mary, you are correct on bopth statements. However, the speedy trial is not so speedy anc can take a year or more after an arrest.
Ex-president Calderon skipped jail time because the court reduced his 15 years conviction to 3 years. Ergo, parole.

Being a simple expat, this story confuses me. Here I thought “preventive detention” was a temporary means to hold someone while a case was being made to take to court for a conviction of a crime. This guy was “arrested”, the OIJ “investigated”, drugs were “confiscated”. What’s with the “preventive detention”? Why not go directly to court, be convicted and go to jail. However, as I understand it , if one is given a sentence of less than 3 years, they’re out on probation.
