CR can take on as much debt as it wants. Ever hear of default? When that word comes into play, we can either hope for a “bail-out” or preparations for foreign ownership of this country. Is CR truly sustainable (talking about economics only) or is it selling its “soul” to the highest bidder? When all the wealth is redistributed and we’re all equally poor, where do we get money to continue the economy?

Be very careful about floating loans such as this, take some hints from the problems of the USA in this respect. Yes, there are many areas of improvement needed within the system, but it does work better within. I now reside within San Isisdro and see many things that could stand improving, but at what cost in the overall picture? In my opinion, it would work better to entice people to come here from the efforts of improving the system to infuse residents instead of taxing them to death and making them run away to Panama or Nicaragua. I love being in Costa Rica for many reasons, but after two years here see that there is growing a strong similarity to the US in so many areas. Higher taxes and less services from government.

The Caja system is far from being perfect and like very health care system in the world, its under huge pressure. For those who object to paying though… think of this.. if you are in a road accident and unconscious, an ambulance will take you to a Caja hospital and you will be treated, regardless of your insurance status. I would rather pay a paltry $12 a month than be left on a trolley until I waken up with a clerk standing over me waiting to discuss how I’m going to pay… wouldn’t you?

Even though I pay for health insurance from the States, (which is quite expensive) as a permanent resident of Costa Rica I must still pay the Caja. I do so every 3 month though I have never used it. I cannot understand why I must pay the Caja if I can prove that I am not a burden on Costa Rica by having my own health insurance. Here is an idea. How about an automatic withdrawal from your paycheck for the required Caja payment. Although I detest any action by a government that does this, what is good for the goose is good for the gander! Oh, nevermind…the new tax law is going to find and force the evaders to pay and so we will not need the loan afterall! Sorry, just a miscommunication!
By the way my Caja payment is tied to my residency so if it is not paid then I lose my right to renew my residency and therefore also lose other rights such as the right to carry which I have currently. As to Danny’s comment a wise man once said a million here and a million there and pretty soon we are talking real money. In Costa Rica we are way past real money and soon the house of cards will fall.
