Yep, it’s totally predatory, they’re looking for rich Americans to squeeze. I left the country the same day as I got my $1000 USD ticket, not gonna get hustled by the crooked cops.

Tickets here in Costa Rica are super high and mostly targeted at turists. All the locals seem to pass cars everywhere and be speeding all the time. I finally decided to pass a supper slow car and for my luck a police comming the opposite way saw me as I was finishing the pass. To my surprice the ticket would be $1,200, yes dollars plus some 30% fee. Just for passing a slow vehicle in a long straight road. Locals do these all the time, so I had no idea it would cost so much. Part of my passing included a bridge and a double yellow line. So I was told it was $600 for passing at bridge and $600 for passing a double yellow line, plus I would have to pay a 30% fee on top of that, which is the standard. That would be a total of $1,550 for making an elligal pass that I learned from whatching hundreadths of others.
I had to negotiate with the cop. He would not take any small amounts. I had to empty my whole wallet with him. It cost me $300 so he would not write me a ticket. Gready bustart!!
This is my 4th visit in the country with my family, but I don’t plann to come back again after these insane ticket fees, there are other counties just as nice that don’t abuse their tourists in these manner.

Perhaps letting them back in but not letting them out would work. Just a thought.

since tourists and gringos living here are the only ones ever ticketed it is totally unfair… and that’s a great way to kill tourism. not let a person back into the country…

Often you don’t know you have a ticket. I know almost every year when I renew my marchamo I find that I have a ticket for something. Never did I get a paper ticket or was I made aware of it. I’m pretty sure this is just one of them things they say, that will never actually be implemented.

How will will they monitor it? Will the traffic tickets for foreigners have a line for their passport number and details to be entered into a system that works with the immigration computers? This sounds like a pie-in-the-sky idea.
