Why ICE Is Stalling 3G
ICE, the Instituto Costarricense
de Electricidad and the only
provider of cellular service in
Costa Rica has been falling
behind in installing the next
generation of cellular network
known as 3G.
The plan to install a 3G network
in the country began almost
fives years ago, though it
wasn't until this year that
things started moving and then,
well, stopped.
Of the course our beloved ICE
has given us the why's and why
not's of the delays, but we
believe it to be something much
more simple and to the heart of
Tico lifestyle: the 3G is GPS
capable!
What is GPS? Simply, it is a way
of letting our spouses,
girlfriends/boyfriends or
sentimental partner a way of
letting them know where we are
at all times.
3G cellular phones can be
equipped with GPS, which
although is a great toll to tell
us where we are and to help us
to know where were are going, it
is also a "tattletaler".
You see, the excuse "I'm at the
office dear", or "I went to see
my mother" or "I had
lunch/dinner with the boss" or
other typical excuses with GSP
just don't fly anymore. Your
better (or worse) half, can and
with the touch of a few buttons,
can know exactly where you are -
or where, as it may be - and rat
you out in a instant. Worse yet,
you are the one paying for the
great service that makes you
into a liar.
With these devices, the
technology of darkens the
picture.
Of course, your wife, husband,
boyfriend, girlfriend see it as
an excellent way to keep tabs on
you. There is no getting away
from being tracked down, unless
you turn off the unit, and then
for sure he/she will know you
are up to no good.
And besides, we all know how
stressful it is to have a
cellular phone nearby and have
it turned off? Come on, admit
it, we have all checked the
status of our phone, make sure
it is not turned off, when it
doesn't ring for some time.
If you are anywhere but in Costa
Rica the only way out of all of
this is not to buy a 3G phone,
or more importantly not to buy
your wife, girlfriend, etc, one.
For the corporate types who are
required to carry the latest
technology, to keep in touch
with the boss or clients, tough
luck.
In Costa Rica, however, we are
safe and all thanks to ICE.
It will be sometime, they now
say by the end of 2009 before
the 3G network will be active.
But we all know that ICE does
not use the same calendar that
the rest of us use, and thanks
for that.
Well, at least that is our
thoughts on why ICE is stalling
the introduction of the 3G. If
you have another opinion, please
let us know. Write to:
