Rice and Beans
Rice and Beans is OK, but, IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE TO
EAT?
My December guests, Godfrey from Wales and Donna
from Indiana who are now from Marcos Island Florida
wanted to see if Costa Rica would be a good place to
escape the incredible inflation and snobbery of this
part of Florida. A 100 by 100 foot lot, not on a
water channel, now costs $200,000 there.

They
set the record so far, for bringing the most
clothes and toys for distribution to folks we
encounter while on the tour. They had bought two
large military type duffle bags. Both were full
of really nice, expensive, items. They had run a
request for donations in their neighborhood
e-magazine and had received more than they could
carry. Below are photos of some of the happy
recipients of this early Christmas. That moon in
the second photo is Godfrey shooting a photo.

They specified one of their most important criteria
for possibly moving here is FOOD. “We can eat rice
and beans, but, we want real food too. ”They do not
eat any seafood and do not want to sit at the same
table with people who are. He says for him to eat
any meat it “must have had eyebrows and shit in the
field”. We had to translate this into “Tiene ceja y
caca en el campo” for many of our waiters. We ate in
Restaurants from Zarcero, San Ramon, Fortuna,
Samara, Acosta, Puriscal, and Miramar. Of course the
meat was beef, pork, or chicken. They both raved at
how great the meals were. A “great guide” like me
knows where to find Filet Mignon even in the
boondocks and I have commented before how I feel the
chicken and pork here are superior to most in the
USA. They love gardening and were favorably
impressed with the quality and freshness of the
vegetables and fruits with the meals.
Breakfasts were even a pleasant surprise for
them. The eggs (from real chickens without any
chemicals) taste better and the bacon is better
than you can find in most stores in the USA. We
stopped at one of our wood fired bakeries here
in Acosta and they tried many different types of
fresh baked goodies.
They are looking for a large tract of land and
want to not see any neighbors whether they are
Ticos or Gringos. They really liked parts of the
Nicoya Peninsula highlands, a view property near
Acosta, and areas near Santiago de Puriscal.
They are already planning their return trip to
further explore these areas and maybe make a run
down to San Isidro de General and Ojochal.
