“Many go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after” Henry David Thoreau. I am so glad to be back in Costa Rica after spending 36 days in Tennessee and Texas. I got to witness again the hectic pace required to support the normal lifestyle.

Both husband and wife must work to pay for the always bigger, better cars and houses. I of course, was one of the normal folk for many years. Luckily, I went broke and had to find a way to live on Social Security.

I had thought I wanted to live in Costa Rica since my first visit in 1989. But, like so many dreams, I never really got serious about it. I told myself I was working to have enough money accumulated that with it and Social Security, I could maintain a lifestyle similar to that of the states: big house, 2 cars, etc.

Well, due to my bad decisions and timing of markets, I was forced to reevaluate my lifestyle. As inconceivable as it seemed initially, I am happier than ever living in our little 2 bedroom, 1 bath home and no cars here in San Ignacio de Acosta. We have an apartment that we rent to fellow Expats for enough money to pay all of our house costs.

We are always busy doing the things we really enjoy; riding the Moto, reading, remodeling the house, cooking exotic meals to share with neighbors, visiting with neighbors, watching History and Discovery TV, and corresponding via Internet with others who are contemplating the move.

Once I complete the hot tub in the Mirador (see pictures) and as long as Uncle Sugar keeps direct depositing the SS checks,  I will want for NOTHING. Imagine sitting in my new hot tub with it’s two 4 HP jets vigorously massaging your aching back, day or night in the wafting breeze, (it is blowing like heck right now, but that is just a short seasonal thing) sipping on a nice glass of wine or a Margarita on the Rocks.

Henry David never had it so good!
