"Finding Your Way'

Anyone who has lived or traveled in Latin America knows from experience that it is very hard to find your way around.  This can especially be true if you don't speak Spanish.

In Costa Rica, it is even harder to 'keep ones bearings' since street signs are few and far between and most houses don't have numbered addresses.

Memorize the Spanish survival phrases below and you should be able to find your way around, locate an address and hopefully not get lost.

ΏA quι distancia queda...? — How far is ...?

ΏDσnde estα...? — Where is...?

Tome la primera calle... — Take the first street...

a la derecha — to the right

a la izquierda — to the left

directo; derecho — straight ahead

diagonal a — diagonal to

a la par de/ al lado de... — next to

ΏHay un...por aquν? — Is there a ...around here?

Doble a la derecha — Turn right.

Doble a la izquierda — Turn left.

una cuadra - a block

cien metros — a block in Costa Rica

cien varas — also a block in Costa Rica

entrada — driveway

la esquina — corner

cerca de — near

lejos de — far

enfrente de — opposite/across the street

allν — there

aquν — here

en el cruce — at the intersection

el semαforo — traffic light

Estoy perdido — I'm lost

ΏPuede indicarme el camino? — Can you show me how to get to...?

la primera derecha; izquierda — the first right; left

la segunda derecha; izquierda — the second right; left

norte — north

sur — south

este — east

oeste — west

Tiquismo of the week: "Vara" is an old unit of measurement that is the equivalent of a meter (2.8 feet). Cien varas often means a city block in Costa Rica.  Another expression is, "ΏQuι es la vara?  means , "What's happening?"
