The first major brush fire of the Central Valley
occurred in Guachipelin de Escazu, west of Multiplaza and the
Intercontinental Hotel kept firefighters busy in
controlling the flames to avoid spreading, Sunday
afternoon on 19 January 2004.
The majority of the brush fires are a natural
occurrence, according to fire officials. Some are
set deliberately by owners to clear their lands,
while others are a result of mischeif.
