The
World"
The
heads
of
13.000
police
officials
around
the
world,
recognized
the
work
of a
narcotics
officer
in
Costa
Rica
as
the
best
in
the
world.
The
award
was
bestowed
on
the
agent,
whose
identity
was
withheld,
in a
conference
held
in
Chicago
by
the
International
Association
of
Chiefs
of
Police.
The
agent
was
honoured
for
his
work
in
fighting
international
drug
trafficking
and
primarily
for
his
role
in
the
capture
of
alleged
Colombian
drug
trafficker,
Alexander
Leudo
Nieves,
who
was
one
of
the
most
wanted
by
the
Drug
Enforcement
Administration
(DEA).
The
capture
occurred
in
Santa
Domingo
de
Heredia
three
months
back.
Leudo
was
even
able
to
obtain
Costa
Rican
nationalization
which
is
now
impeding
efforts
to
extradite
him
to
the
United
States.
The
best
police
officer
in
the
world
forms
part
of
Costa
Rica's
Policía
de
Control
de
Drogas
(PCD)
and
has
a
record
of
participating
in a
number
of
international
investigations
in
2010
and
2011.
The
nomination
of
"agent
X"
was
made
by
the
DEA
to
the
police
chiefs
association
that
represents
13.000
police
officials
in
81
countries,
including
the
United
States
and
Mexico.
The
officer's
identity
is
not
revealed
for
security
reasons.
During
the
conference
on
Monday
the
Chiefs
also
recognized
the
important
work
of
other
police
officials
involved
in
investigations
to
stop
Mexican,
Colombian,
Costa
Rican
and
other
drug
traffickers.
The
authorities
of
Costa
Rica's
Ministerio
de
Seguridad
Pública
sent
congratulations
to
both
agent
X
and
other
officers
urging
others
to
follow
this
example
and
that
of
many
others
who
excel
in
their
daily
work.
The
director
of
the
DEA
office
in
Costa
Rica,
Philip
Springer,
nominated
agent
X
for
the
award,
calling
the
work
of
the
agent
as
the
backbone
of
each
case
they
investigate.
According
to
Springer,
"he
simply
is a
great
person.
In
my
26
years
in
law
enforcement,
I
have
rarely
met
anyone
like
him.
This
is
what
we
all
investigators
should
aspire
to
be.
We
are
very
proud
of
him".
Meanwhile,
U.S.
Ambassador
to
Costa
Rica,
Anne
S.
Andrew,
said
that
"agent
X is
a
special
police
officer,
a
role
model
for
integrity
and
public
service
and
a
valuable
partner
for
us
in
our
work
with
the
Ministry
of
Public
Security
to
help
ensure
that
Costa
Rica
is a
place
safer
for
its
citizens". |
