Virilla or "Platina" Bridge To Be Closed On Sunday

The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) has asked the Laboratorio de Materiales y Modelos Estructurales (LANAMME) to analyze the problems of the Virilla or "platina" bridge.

The LANAMME analysis will be done in conjunction with a MOPT team in the hopes of finding a solution to what appears a never ending problem.

The MOPT announced that repairs will be done over two Sundays to avoid major interruption of traffic over the bridge on Costa Rica's busiest highway, the autopista General Cañas, that has a daily traffic volume of 90.000 vehicles.

The closures will begin this Saturday night at midnight and re-open Monday morning in the hopes of a permanent repair to the cracking concrete poured less than two weeks ago.

The closure of the highway is total between the Pablo II bridge and the Plaza Cariari.

LANAMME is the academic research unit of the Uniseridad de Costa Rica (UCR) whose main purpose is self-development resarch, teaching, technical cooperation and technology transfer for the protection of civilian infrastructure, roads and lifelines.

Its main objective is to create and transfer expertise and services to private enterprise, autonomous institutions, academic institutions, specialized institutions and local or municipal governments in the country and the governments of the region, to contribute to the adoption of modern technological processes and safe production processes and strengthen competitiveness in the field of transport infrastructure engineering, seismic, structural and geotechnical engineering.
