Successful First Steps to Solve Nicaragua-Costa Rica Conflict

The first four-way meeting promoted by Mexico and Guatemala to find a solution to the Nicaragua-Costa Rica border conflict was rated as successful, the local press in Mexico reported on Tuesday.

Both the facilitators and the parties in conflict described as very important and useful the meeting in Cuernavaca, known as a facilitation exercise, according to press reports.

After the talks yesterday headed by the foreign ministers of Mexico, Patricia Espinosa, and Guatemala, Haroldo Rodas Melgar, the four-way facilitation exercise was officially set up.

It was agreed during the closed-door meeting that foreign ministers or other representatives from Guatemala and Mexico attend future talks on the issue, and that they visit San José (Costa Rica) and Managua (Nicaragua)

Representatives of Costa Rica and Nicaragua, ambassadors Melvin Saenz and Denis Moncada, respectively, thanked Mexico for its hospitality during the meeting, and also Guatemala for offering to host the second dialogue of the facilitation exercise.
