Banco Nacional and Banco Cathay Join List of Quickpass Issuers

Tired of the long lines at the toll stations on the San José - Caldera? The solution is the "Quickpass", an electronic device that allows a vehicle through the tolls while charging the bank account instead of having to stop and fumble for change.

The Quickpass has been operational since the tolls on the road began on January 2010.

But getting one was a problem for many, for one it could only be obtained at an HSBC bank which required the opening of an account. And then the discriminatory act of charging new customers double the amount of existing customers of the HSBC for the electronic unit.

To deal with the problem the road concessionaire Autopistas del Sol signed deals with BAC San José and Lafise banks to also sell the units.

But, these two banks were tight as a drum when dealing with "non" customers of the bank.

Now, hopefully, the situation will be eased further with the addition of the Banco Nacional and Banco Cathay to the list of banks offering the Quickpass.

Not that these two banks will be any less stringent, but rather that the state bank Banco Nacional, on its own, has the largest amount of existing customers.

The Quickpass can be used at the four toll stations along the 80 kilometre highway that runs between La Sabana park in San José to the Pacific port town of Caldera.

Using the Quickpass means going through tolls is a breeze, as all a driver has to do is approach the station, slow down to 40 km/h, choose the exclusive lane and then let the electronics take over, identifying the vehicle, charging the account holder and opening the gate to allow the vehicle to pass, all done at the speed of electronics.

Autopistas says that today some 40.000 have the Quickpass.
