Costa

Most
Violent
Semana
Santa In
Recent
Years
This
Semana
Santa
(Holy
Week)
has
become
the most
violent
in
recent
years
after 41
people
died
"violently",
leading
the list
are
drownings,
traffic
accidents
and
attacks.
The Cruz
Roja
(Red
Cross)
also
rescued
102
people,
60 of
them
from
rivers
and
beaches.
Two
people
are
still
missing.
One of
the two
youths
was last
week in
Playa
Potrero
in Santa
Cruz,
Guanacaste
and the
other in
Playa
Nosara.
"We
reiterate
the need
for
increased
preventive
measures
when
visiting
rivers,
beaches
and
pools,
and road
behavior
as this
year has
seen an
unfortunate
increase,
" said
Miguel
Carmona,
president
of the
Costa
Rican
Red
Cross.
Throughout
the
country
the Red
Cross
operated
123
first
aid pots
located
in
mountains,
beaches
and
roadsides.
The
provinces
with the
highest
number
of
incidents
were
Puntarenas,
San José
and
Limón.
Of the
total 14
deaths
were
from
traffic
accidents
and
eight
homicides
- double
that of
2010.
Last
year a
total of
32
deaths
were
recorded
during
the same
period,
while in
2005
there
were 25
deaths.
