Costa Rica: Most Violent Semana Santa In Recent Years

This Semana Santa (Holy Week) has become the most violent in recent years after 41 people died "violently", leading the list are drownings, traffic accidents and attacks.

The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) also rescued 102 people, 60 of them from rivers and beaches.

Two people are still missing. One of the two youths was last week in Playa Potrero in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste and the other in Playa Nosara.

"We reiterate the need for increased preventive measures when visiting rivers, beaches and pools, and road behavior as this year has seen an unfortunate increase, " said Miguel Carmona, president of the Costa Rican Red Cross.

Throughout the country the Red Cross operated 123 first aid pots located in mountains, beaches and roadsides.

The provinces with the highest number of incidents were Puntarenas, San José and Limón. Of the total 14 deaths were from traffic accidents and eight homicides - double that of 2010.

Last year a total of 32 deaths were recorded during the same period, while in 2005 there were 25 deaths.
