Rican
President
Wants
Larger
US
Presence
President
Laura
Chinchilla
is
pressuring
the
Legislative
Assembly
to
authorize
the
docking
of U.S.
military
ships in
Costa
Rica
despite
opposition.
In
remarks
at the
inauguration
of a
U.S.-
financed
Coast
Guard
base in
the port
of
Caldera
on
Thursday,
Chinchilla
criticized
assembly
members
for
delaying
approval
of
U.S./Costa
Rican
joint
military
patrols.
"I must
publicly
apologize,
because
in six
months
we have
not been
able to
authorize
joint
patrols,"
the
president
said at
the
inauguration,
attended
by U.S.
Ambassador
Anne
Andrew.
Chinchilla
said she
planned
to
personally
call
assembly
members
about
the
issue.
In
December,
the
Assembly
approved
the
entry of
46 U.S.
U.S.
Coast
Guard
ships
and
troops
for
anti-drug
operations,
but did
not
authorized
the
docking
of 26
warships.
At that
time,
assembly
member
Juan
Carlos
Mendoza
of the
Accion
Ciudadana
Party
said he
opposed
allowing
the
warships
to dock
"because
other
strategic
military
goals
other
than
fighting
drug
trafficking,
were not
clear."
