Costa
Rica:
"Platina"
Bridge
Repair
Will
Hurt
High
Season
Tourism
Although
the
period
from
Christmas
to the
start of
the
school
year in
February
sees
less
traffic
on roads
in San
José, as
many
Costa
Ricans
head for
the
beaches
and
mountains
for the
"summer
school
vacation",
it is
also the
"high
tourist"
season
in Costa
Rica.
This
fact was
pointed
out by
the
Cámara
Nacional
de
Turismo
(CANATUR)
- the
Costa
Rican
toursim
board -
with
regards
to the
decision
by the
Ministerio
de Obras
Públicas
y
Transportes
(MOPT)
to
repair
the "platina"
of the
Virilla
bridge
over the
autopista
General
Cañas.
Canatur
points
out that
the
repair
work
that is
expectec
to
continue
for 10
weeks
will add
travel
time to
and from
San José
and the
airport,
hurting
the
tourist
industry,
as many
visitors
will
either
pass up
on
visiting
and/or
staying
in San
José and
will
take
home a
negative
image of
Costa
Rica,
especially
if they
miss
their
flight
because
of
traffic
congestion
on the
autopista.
Juan
Carlos
Ramos,
president
of
CANATUR,
said in
a press
statement
that the
temporary
lane
closures
planned
on the
autopista
will
impact
on the
tourist
destinations.
Destinations
like
Cartago,
Turrialba
and
others
east of
San José
will all
suffer,
according
to
CANATUR,
as these
are
destinations
that
have to
cross
San José
or the
alternate
routes
and the
congestion
that the
"platina"
bridge
will
cause.
Ramos
said he
will
petition
the MOPT
to
re-consider
the
decision
and seek
alternatives.
