Guatemalan Ex President's Trial Postponed

GUATEMALA - The embezzlement trial of former Guatemalan President Alfonso Portillo has been put off again, and it is now expected to be held in January 2011.

The latest postponement came Wednesday because the court hearing the case received the files yesterday and had no time to study it.

Portillo and some of the top officials during his administration (2000-2004) are accused of embezzling 120 million quetzals (about US$15 million at the current exchange rate) from the Guatemalan Defense Ministry.

The other defendants are the former ministers of defense and finance, Eduardo Arevalo and Manuel Maza, as well as a security chief from his cabinet.

Since October 2008, when Portillo was extradited from Mexico, where he went at the end of his mandate, the former Guatemalan leader has been in the spotlight as the highest-ranking Guatemalan official to be arrested in history

Portillo was then released $1 million bail, but early this year, the U.S. justice system ordered his arrest and extradition. Portillo was captured by authorities in January near the Guatemalan Caribbean coast.
