Costa
Rica
Headed
To The
UN Over
Conflict
With
Nicaragua
Costa
Rica's
Foreign
Minister,
René
Castro,
said he
will be
meeting
with
United
Nations
officials
to
discuss
the
dispute
with
Nicaragua,
leaving
for New
York on
Monday.
Castro
is
expected
to meet
with
members
of the
Security
Council
and
General
Assembly
for
talks on
the
dispute
on Costa
Rica's
next
step for
a
resolution.
Both
Castro
and
presidenta
Laura
Chinchilla
have
warned
they
could
take the
dispute
to the
Security
Council
if
Nicaragua
continues
to
refuse
to
withdraw
troops
from
disputed
territory
along
the San
Juan
border
river.
Nicaragua
sent
troops
to the
area
last
month.
Nicaragua's
president
Daniel
Ortega
has so
far
refused
to heed
to an
order by
the
Organization
of
American
States
(OAS),
saying
on
Monday
in a
public
statement
that the
OAS is
not a
competent
court to
decide
the
border
dispute
and
would
take the
case to
the
International
Court.
Costa
Rica has
already
taken
the case
to the
International
Court of
Justice,
charging
Nicaragua
with
environmental
damage
and for
constructing
a canal
on Costa
Rican
territory.
The
United
Nations
move is
another
step in
Costa
Rica's
search
for a
diplomatic
solution
to the
conflict. |
