Missing Manhole Covers A Serious Problem In San José

Costa Rica will well known for its potholes. But another danger lurks for drivers and pedestrians, missing manhole covers. Such was the case on Wednesday when a woman was swallowed up by a manhole in the area of López Mateos, in San Sebastián, on the south side of San José.

Women is pulled out a manhole cover by the Cruz Roja. The woman fell in a manhole without a cover.

Fortunately Arlette Fallas survived the fall to tell her story.

Arlette said she was with her mother when hailing a taxi. Her mother got in the taxi but Arlette missed her step and fell into the manhole before she could board the vehicle.

The driver, whos said he did not notice the missing manhole, immediately called for help who with specialized equipment were able to pull the woman out of the bowels of the drain system.

Officials at the hospital San Juan de Dios reported the woman entered the medical centre with a fractured leg and bumps in her head.

Municipal officials say they continually battle the theft of manhole covers that are sold to junk yards for cash to buy drugs. In San José alone officials say they replace on average a dozen manhole covers a day.

Thus, beware before stepping, especially when getting in or out of a vehicle, to make sure then manhole has a cover.
