BRASILIA - At least six people were killed and 3,048 people were evacuated from their houses due to the strong rains that affected Rio de Janeiro on weekend, Rio de Janeiro state Civil Defense secretariat said on Monday.

On Saturday, the heavy rain lasted for about five hours in Rio de Janeiro and the rainfall amounted to 109.2 millimeters, an equivalent of the entire month of March 2009.

The rains led to two landslides in the metropolitan region where four people died, and in Niteori city where other two died.

The cities more affected by storm were Sao Gonzalo, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Pedro da Aldeia.

As many as 2,905 people were evacuated from Sao Gonzalo and other 102 from Sao Pedro. A major road in the state had been closed because a bridge was in danger of collapse, and the traffic was back to normal only on Monday.

Also the city of Saquerma in the lakes region between Janeiro River and Cabo Frio was affected.

Meanwhile, Rio de Janeiro's mayor Edurdo Paes said that it is necessary to evacuate the people living in houses of high risk. "We cannot let those people to continue being in risk."

According to a statement from Rio de Janeiro Road Department, a support beam was installed to eliminate risks of accident.
