More Than 3,000 People
Unsheltered Due To Rain In Rio
BRASILIA - At least six people were killed
and 3,048 people were evacuated from their
houses due to the strong rains that affected
Rio de Janeiro on weekend, Rio de Janeiro
state Civil Defense secretariat said on
Monday.
On Saturday, the heavy rain lasted for about
five hours in Rio de Janeiro and the
rainfall amounted to 109.2 millimeters, an
equivalent of the entire month of March
2009.
The rains led to two landslides in the
metropolitan region where four people died,
and in Niteori city where other two died.
The cities more affected by storm were Sao
Gonzalo, in the metropolitan region of Rio
de Janeiro, and Sao Pedro da Aldeia.
As many as 2,905 people were evacuated from
Sao Gonzalo and other 102 from Sao Pedro. A
major road in the state had been closed
because a bridge was in danger of collapse,
and the traffic was back to normal only on
Monday.
Also the city of Saquerma in the lakes
region between Janeiro River and Cabo Frio
was affected.
Meanwhile, Rio de Janeiro's mayor Edurdo
Paes said that it is necessary to evacuate
the people living in houses of high risk.
"We cannot let those people to continue
being in risk."
According to a statement from Rio de Janeiro
Road Department, a support beam was
installed to eliminate risks of accident.
The department also reported that the roads
were getting special attention from cleanup
crews to remove objects taken to the roads
by the rains.
