Portreadores Back To Protests On Wednesday

Driving in and around San José on Wednesday could be complicated, as the porteadores - the informal taxi drivers or gypsy cabs - announced a protest of the new traffic law.

The protest will include "tortuguismo" (slow driving) between 6am and 10pm in various parts of San José and outlying areas to press the legislature to eliminate the elimination of the "porteo" that is included in the new Ley de Tránsito.

The action comes at an opportune time as legislator continue to discuss amendments to a law that they approved almost two years ago but went into effect only last week.

Germán Lobo, director of the Cámara Costarricense de Porteadores, said that this (tomorrow's protest) is the last warning the government will have before extreme measures are taken.

Lobo assures that they are being pressured into the action and although there is every intention to keep it peaceful, they will defend their position if provoked.

"If we are allowed to protest, I guarantee that we will only slow down traffic, not block it", said Lobo.

The director assures that all the porteadores want is the right to continue to work and provide for their families.
