Sandinistas Lead in Regional Elections In Nicaragua

MANAGUA - The Sandinista Front for National Liberation (FSLN) leads on Monday most of Caribbean municipalities, according to the first official information about the March 7 regional elections.

Electoral Supreme Council (CSE) president Roberto Rivas revealed preliminary figures today's midnight, when there is still some information of the vote counting in over a half of polling stations.

The most completed figures to learn results of each of the eight political forces will be informed today, the official said in a news conference.

Sunday's elections concluded without incidents at the predicted time, several sources reported.

About 290,000 voters elected 45 councilors in the North Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAN) and a similar figure in the South Atlantic Autonomous Region (RAAS). The governors from both territories will be elected for the next four years.

Observers authorized by the CSE of the Nicaraguan Center for Autonomous Human Rights and Citizens, as well as OAS and EU representatives, as technicians, attended elections.
