Tourists Remain Stranded in Peru

A total of 14 South Korean tourists still
remain stranded near the Machu Picchu
archaeological site in Peru, a Foreign
Ministry spokesman said Thursday.
It has been confirmed that 34 South Korean
tourists were stranded at the World Heritage
Site in eastern Peru's Andes Mountains, of
which 20 have been rescued in the last two
days, following the heaviest rainfall in 15
years that caused flash flooding and massive
mudslides over the weekend, the spokesman
Kim Young-sun said.
The reaming tourists are in healthy
conditions as they are placed in a safe
area, and the South Korean government is
working closely with the Peruvian government
to expedite the rescue process, he added.
Peru's top tourist destination, Machu
Picchu, and its surrounding Cuzco region
have been hit by a deluge over the weekend
that reportedly destroyed 250 houses and
large areas of crops, and the country was
forced to suspend all train services in the
area as well.
