Guatemalan President
Calls For Unity
GUATEMALA - Guatemalan president, Alvaro
Colom, strongly called for unity in the
country to solve the serious problems in the
nation.
In conversations with national police forces
expressed that it was necessary to have the
capacity to solve such pressing problems
such as reducing poverty, insecurity and
impunity.
"Guatemala needs it" the president
emphasized when he presented a government
report to congress at the end of his two
years of mandate, during a solemn session
programmed for this purpose.
The head of State lashed out against the
opposition blocs in the legislative body for
their work against the government
initiatives for national benefit.
In this manner he called on Parliament to
play its role as a scenario for objective
discussion in favor of the nation where he
can discuss with the Executive on the
scourges that hit society.
For this reason Guatemala needs dialogue and
harmony, Colom said, and offered to "reduce
our differences and boost our agreements."
This was the message sent by the president
of the republic to the solemn session of
Congress that was also scenario for
assumption of the new Directive Junta of
nine members headed by officialist party
member, Roberto Alejos, reelected for the
next year.
Prevention of corruption, combat against
organized crime and issuing penal reforms
are some of the compromises announced by
Alejos as priority for the new legislature.
Congress president called on dealing with
legislative programs of urgent national
issues that still await definitions by the
obstacles placed by the opposition.
Proposals to compensate victims of the armed
conflict, an agenda of the indigenous
peoples, rural development, fiscal reform,
boosting employment and gender equality, or
eradicating intra-family violence are some
of the issues on the table. |
