Guatemala: Ex President of Congress to Trial
GUATEMALA - Eduardo Meyer is the second ex
President of the Congress of Guatemala to
face a judicial process on Thursday for
funds appropriation of that entity. Now
Deputy Meyer and former manager of the
brokerage of Markets for Future (MDF) Raul
Giron will go to trial charged with the
embezzlement of 82, 2 million quetzal (More
than $10 million regarding the current
exchange rate) in 2008.
Before reading his resolution, which affirms
that there are enough elements to trial both
men, the judge in charge, Carlos Aguilar,
highlighted how this is a case of great
impact because the money belonging to the
people of Guatemala was lost.
However, Aguilar described the crimes that
the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor charges Meyer
with as too benevolent: guilty of
embezzlement, omission of reporting the
crime and dereliction of duty, while Giron
was accused of especial case of fraud and
money laundering.
On August 2009, Meyer, of the ruling
National Unity of Hope, resigned his
position involved in the scandal of the loss
of that money, which was fraudulently moved
to the MDF. |
