Concern and Criticism over Peru-Venezuela

LIMA - A reaction of criticism and concern
has caused a new diplomatic confrontation in
Peru on Tuesday due to President Alan
Garcia´s statement that Bolivia is acting
against Lima by the order of Venezuela.
International analyst Ernesto Velit,
socialist veteran Javier Diez Canseco, and
ex foreign minister Luis Gonzales Posada,
expressed different opinions on that matter.
The government of Venezuela responded on
Monday with a communiqué of rejection to the
statements of Garcia, and accused his
administration of following Washingtonâ�Ös
instructions for dividing the South American
region.
Velit and Diez Canseco considered the
situation very serious and the first one
said that this situation has been caused by
the poor control of the official statements
on foreign policy, and that governments have
the right to friendship relations.
Velit added that Garcia is regionally
isolating Peru with his statements and shows
a poor image of integration, something
negative for the nation.
After advising Garcia and the Foreign
Ministry to measure their words carefully,
Velit noted that Garcia should take into
account the sensitivity of Bolivian and
Venezuelan presidents, Evo Morales, and Hugo
Chavez, respectively.
Diez Canseco stated that García is a
professional agitator who has incurred in
the double mistake of falling out with
Bolivia and Venezuela, despite the
importance of both nations for Peru. |
