Moderate Earthquake Shakes Eastern Venezuela
CARACAS - A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck
the east coast of Venezuela late Monday
night, without immediate reports of any
victims and material damages, Director of
Venezuelan Foundation of Seismology
Investigations (Funvisis) Francisco Garces
said on Tuesday.
The earthquake struck at 11:06 p.m. local
time (0336 GMT Tuesday) and the epicenter of
the quake was located 18 km southwest to
Guiria town in Sucre state with a depth of
105 km.
Venezuela is a country with seismic activity
for being located at the end of the Andean
mountain range, and over two main tectonic
plates -- the Caribbean Sea and South
America.
During a phone interview with the state-run
TV channel Venezolana de Television (VTV),
Garces said that the earthquake was also
felt in Bolivar state, southeast of the
country.
Early on Tuesday morning a minor earthquake
measuring 2.9 magnitude was felt in the city
of Los Teques, Miranda state, some 20
minutes' drive from capital Caracas.
