Costa Ricans Demand Taitelbaum Resignation
Political and social sectors in Costa Rica
demanded the resignation of the new
Defensora de los Habitantes (Ombudswoman)
Ofelia Taitelbaum after denouncing she was
appointed to the post due to influences of
the presidency.
Taitelbaum showed up for work at her new job
on Monday after being appointed by the
Legislative Assembly before the Christmas
break last month.
The Defensoría is an institution that
belongs to the people and is unacceptable
that the political power named the president
of the institution, said José Merino
legislator for the Frente Amplio party.
Scores of people began on Monday to protest
in front of the entrance of the institution
located in Barrio Mexico, to reject the
appointment of Taitelbaum, who resigned her
seat as a legislator for the Partido
Liberación Nacional (PLN) party which is
currently in power.
This movement is against Oscar Arias' abuse
of authority, said Geovanny Jiménez, one of
the demonstrators. Protests are supported by
several of the presidential candidates for
the elections next February 7th.
Ottón Solís of the Partido Acción Cuidadana
(PAC), Eugenio Trejos of the Frente Amplio
and Rolando Araya of the Alianza Patriotica,
have all been outspoken against the
Taitelbaum appointment, alleging the
election was rigged by the governing party.
A lawyer lodged a protection appeal against
the Legislative Assembly for violating the
Constitution when appointing Taitelbaum.
