Second Round Predicted In Presidential Elections In Costa Rica

Although Laura Chinchilla has a commanding lead over her opponents in the presidential elections to be held on February 7th, the latest opinion poll predicts she lacks the necessary votes to win a first round.

A survey carried out by Borge y Asociados pegs Chinchilla of the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) at 36.7% of the votes, followed by Otto Guevara of the Movimiento Libertario (ML) with 16.2% and Ottón Solís of the Partido Acción Cuidadan (PAC) at only 8.5%.

For any one candidate to take the elections on February 7th, he or she must obtain at least 40% of the votes.

If no one candidate obtains the 40%, the top two must then face a run off election on April 4th.

However there is still plenty of time for the candidates and parties to sway the almost 35% of the eligible voters who are yet undecided.

Chinchilla has dropped almost 10% since the last Borge y Asociados poll in November, while Guevara has gained several points.
